We are still living in times when every donation counts. Last year, The Wit Gallery, its artists and collectors helped raise over $1000 in donations for local and national charities. The charities donated to ranged from organizations researching childhood and breast cancer, food bank support, programs for mentally challenged individuals, and community art programs. Our goal with The Art of Giving 2012 is to double the donations and charities given to this year. We need your help to do this.

You can help us to help others while receiving 20% in savings on the artwork that you purchase.

Receive 10% off the original price of selected artworks and we'll make a 10% tax-deductible donation to a charity in your name.

Each Artist participating in this campaign has generously selected a charity to benefit from part of the proceeds of their sales.* Here is a partial list of the artists and charities that they are giving to. About Scott Gordley :

Scott Gordley is currently Chair of the Department of Art & Design at Montclair State University in New Jersey. In addition to his art, Mr. Gordley is a jazz and blues saxophonist. The two loves came together in his exhibition of jazz paintings at the famed Apollo Theatre in New York City in the summer of 2008, and was considered a tribute to the history of Jazz.

Mr. Marcus is recognized for his innovations in aluminum forges and is one of only a few artists working in cast aluminum.

Philippe Guillerm began his professional life in Paris, France the city where he was born in 1959 and lived for twenty years. Through the years, he has traveled around the world with his wife Jacqueline and their two daughters Monique and Swanne on his forty-eight foot sailboat.

Guillerm's music-inspired sculptures are whimsical and curvaceous string instruments. He uses the theme as a way of expressing human nature and needs; where you see an instrument, he sees an attitude. His works reflect dreams, illusions, and reality and invite the viewer to stop and consider human nature.

A little about Scott Barrow: During his career, hundreds of assignments for advertising, travel, editorial and corporate clients have allowed him to explore the world. Despite his reputation as an inspired location shooter he has often been asked, “So, where is your studio?” His response is that his “studio” is wherever he happens to be at the moment.

Scott has lived, worked and lectured in Virginia, New York City, New Jersey, the Hudson Highlands and most recently the Berkshires of Massachusetts. Editorial assignments are a new focus in his career as well as his growing fine art, and stock photography divisions.

About Gartner Blade:
Gartner Blade glass is the work of Danielle Blade & Stephen Gartner. Business partners since 1995, Danielle and Stephen combine their individual ideas, techniques, and experiences to create original works in blown and sculpted hot glass. Over the past decade they have been developing a series of pieces that explores their interpretation of objects of ritual and worship. The inspiration for these pieces begins with their mutual fascination with the many vessels and sculptural objects revered in the rituals and ceremonies of both primitive and contemporary cultures. Natural elements such as bone, wood, vines and rock formations combine with their highly original color palette to inform their signature designs. Their work merges traditional hand blown techniques with innovative color application and original sculpting techniques.

More about Paul's medium:
Throughout Paul Chojnowski's career, a distinguishing characteristic has been the use of nontraditional media and tools in his art making. His current work, images burned into paper and wood, is an extension of that predisposition; these burned drawings evolved as a result of his conscious effort to embrace art historical traditions while rejecting the traditional processes. In the early 90's Chojnowski was working on wood panels with wax and raw pigments when he found he could burn marks into the surface of the wood using torches. Abandoning abstraction, Chojnowski began burning and scorching wood and paper to create his images. He first showed the fire drawings in Atlanta in 1993.

This Saturday, July 16th from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wit Gallery Artist Michael Alfano will discuss the process and answer questions as he works the clay for a new figurative, surreal piece.

Mr. Alfano has several large sculptures on display throughout the town of Lenox as part of the Village's Sculpture Walk, including "One World United for Peace"pictured below. "Many people ask me how I make the artwork and what inspires me" Alfano said. "At the WIT Gallery this weekend, they can see it happening live."

Mr. Alfano has been represented by The Wit Gallery for several years. His annual outdoor demonstrations in front of the gallery have always captivated passers-by. During the most recent demo, Mr. Alfano sculpted a likeness of Yo Yo Ma called. "The Player and The Played". The completed sculpture will be available this summer at The Wit Gallery along with many other sculptures by Mr. Alfano.

One World United for Peace (Sept. 11th Memorial) by Michael Alfano

We invite you to explore "Engaging Sculpture", an outdoor exhibition which adds an artful and fun touch to the newly renovated downtown streets, sidewalks and parks of Lenox Village.

Featured sculptors include: Michael Alfano, Babette Bloch, Jeff Kaiserman, Stanley Marcus and Leon Smith represented by The Wit Gallery and Al Goldfarb and Louis Pomeranz represented by the Lenox Gallery of Fine Art

The exhibition presents a wide range of moods, from Michael Alfano's reflective sculptures, to the humorous musicians of Stanley Marcus, the abstract horses of Al Goldfarb and beautiful contemporary stainless steel renditions of flowers and animals by Babette Bloch.

More about Paul's medium:
Throughout Paul Chojnowski's career, a distinguishing characteristic has been the use of nontraditional media and tools in his art making. His current work, images burned into paper and wood, is an extension of that predisposition; these burned drawings evolved as a result of his conscious effort to embrace art historical traditions while rejecting the traditional processes. In the early 90's Chojnowski was working on wood panels with wax and raw pigments when he found he could burn marks into the surface of the wood using torches. Abandoning abstraction, Chojnowski began burning and scorching wood and paper to create his images. He first showed the fire drawings in Atlanta in 1993.

About Gartner Blade:
Gartner Blade glass is the work of Danielle Blade & Stephen Gartner. Business partners since 1995, Danielle and Stephen combine their individual ideas, techniques, and experiences to create original works in blown and sculpted hot glass. Over the past decade they have been developing a series of pieces that explores their interpretation of objects of ritual and worship. The inspiration for these pieces begins with their mutual fascination with the many vessels and sculptural objects revered in the rituals and ceremonies of both primitive and contemporary cultures. Philippe Guillerm began his professional life in Paris, France the city where he was born in 1959 and lived for twenty years. Through the years, he has traveled around the world with his wife Jacqueline and their two daughters Monique and Swanne on his forty-eight foot sailboat.

Guillerm's music-inspired sculptures are whimsical and curvaceous string instruments. He uses the theme as a way of expressing human nature and needs; where you see an instrument, he sees an attitude. His works reflect dreams, illusions, and reality and invite the viewer to stop and consider human nature.

I collect and save paper where color and design sparks my interest. Most of my materials are obtained from magazines and catalogs (sometimes art papers) and cut in geometric patterns, rolled in cylinder shapes, or folded in triangles. After arranging and rearranging the pieces in color and pattern the end product may be entirely different from any original concept. Titles are often a perception and connection which evolves after completion. I view each work as a new venture.

Art Week: The Miami Beach Art Fairs

Each year during the first week of December, Miami Beach transforms into the world's center for contemporary art with over 15 Art Fairs running simultaneously from Art Miami, to Art Basel, Red Dot, Scope, Sculpt, Design Miami, Aqua, NADA, Pool, and others, not to mention all of the "happenings", art openings, parties, and gatherings.

This year, as we went through the various fairs searching out new talent and looking for trends, we were pleasantly surprised to see red dots marking the sales of artwork. Everyone that we spoke to at the fairs was hopeful that this signifies a positive change in the art market.

This year, video art was making quite a splash. The technology makes it possible to hang a video piece on the wall just like a painting or photograph, and collectors were bidding on it in droves. Collage and 3-dimensional multi-media installation were also abundant. Taxidermy was used in many sculptures as well!

Here's just one example of a piece that was sold for at least $30,000.00:

"Turkish Bath" by M. Marck, represented by Galerie Von Braunbehrens at Art Miami. This video should be shown vertically. This is a great example of what people are doing with video art installation. The piece was about 36"h x 24" w and hangs on the wall much like a painting. Only one cord, the power cord, is visible. Note the nine red dots to the left of the piece indicating a bidding war that was going on over it!

This coming Saturday and Sunday September 25th & 26th the town of Lenox, MA, holds it's annual fall festival "The Apple Squeeze". Artists and crafts people will be in tents all around the town as galleries and stores fill the sidewalks with sale items and special pieces just for the weekend.

At The Wit Gallery of Art and Wine, we will be featuring the work of two artists: photographer Scott Barrow, and Cuban painter Frank Monteavaro.

Scott Barrow is a well known Berkshire photographer. His ability to photograph any subject is a testament to the almost 35 years that he has spent as a professional photographer. Mr. Barrow's work appears regularly in Berkshire Living Magazine, and frequently in national advertising campaigns, annual reports, magazine articles and coffee table books. The work we will be featuring during the Apple Squeeze will be images of the Berkshires.

Frank Monteavaro was born in Cuba in 1959 and immigrated to Miami, Florida in 1973. His work was first publically displayed in North Miami, in 1996. His work was then shown in various exhibits throughout North, South and Central America.

A self taught artist, Mr. Monteavaro is passionate about never staying the same, always learning, and trying different mediums and techniques. Frank has created his own trademark style which goes from Abstract to Primitive and Modern, all mixed together to create something beautiful and unique. Carol Staub's multi media collage and paintings have garnered over 70 National and International awards and have been featured or published in several magazines and newspapers around the country. Her work is earthy and warm, often with an Asian influence. In addition to teaching workshops in Mixed Media and Collage, she serves on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Women Artists (the Florida Chapter) and is a member of several artistic clubs and societies.

Barbara Scavotto-Earley depicts stories of the human experience with her ceramic and mixed media sculptural work. Throughout her art career, she has modeled, assembled, painted, carved and welded virtues, intemperance, social concerns, spirituality, humor and other pieces in the epic puzzle of human conduct. A sprinkling of wit is common, even in her most reflective sulptures.

Portal #12 oil and map on board by Suzanne Howes-Stevens

Suzanne Howes-Stevens paints scenes of waterways in oil paint onto maps. Using maps as a background or frame allows her to emphasize the borders that exist between water and land, shows us the beauty of these waterways and illustrates the importance of wetlands conservation. These pristine waterways are disappearing; this is often reflected on the edges of the paintings where the water scenes drift and dissolve into the map area.

Michael Alfano sculpts and answers questions of interested passersby

On August 8th, 2010 Yo Yo Ma played at Tanglewood during the "Silk Road" event in the evening. That same day, a clay version of Yo Yo Ma was being created outside of The Wit Gallery by artist Michael Alfano. Mr. Alfano had begun this sculpture, named "The Player and the Played" during an event at the gallery over this past Memorial Day weekend.

It was a beautiful day, as visitors watched and asked questions while Michael sculpted to the music of Yo Yo Ma coming from the Gallery.

Over the next few months, Michael Alfano will complete the sculpting of this piece, then make a limited number of castings in bronze and other permanent materials. The WIT will show the finished piece, along with other surreal sculptures by Alfano already at the gallery.

About the artist:

Michael Alfano is known for creating award-winning figurative and surrealistic sculpture. His art is in museums, galleries, and private collections around the world. Portrait commissions of public figures he has sculpted include Anwar Sadat, Walt Whitman, and Mean “Joe” Green. Massachusetts’ monuments include “George V. Brown” at the starting line of the Boston Marathon and a September 11^th memorial that graces Norfolk’s Town Common.

Locally, his “Peace Offering” bench, metal dancers, and an oversize winged foot have been at Canyon Ranch. A profile of Alfano will appear later this year in a new coffee table book, “100 New England Artists,” by Ashley Rooney. Alfano works and resides in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, where he is currently completing a sculpture for a New England hospital, and a four-foot version of “Cubed,” his popular nine-piece double-sided face.

"Senator Edward Kennedy" by Michael Alfano

Following the death of Senator Edward Kennedy, Michael Alfano presented a large bronze bust of the late Senator to Senator Kerry. A copy of this sculpture will be on display at the Wit during this weekend to correspond with the tribute to the Kennedy Brothers which will be performed at Tanglewood by the Boston Pops and Alec Baldwin on Sunday. Mr. Alfano will also be demonstrating the process of creating a portrait sculpture during the afternoon prior to and during this reception.

"Elusive Radiance" by Olivia Timmons

Olivia Timmons' current body of work deals with social, political, environmental, and physical issues concerning the planet today. She uses creatures of light in contrast with the deep and murky oceanic atmosphere as a metaphor for one of the most prominent concerns of humanity: the sustainability of natural resources and the consequence of human actions on the world.

She is also teaching at Belvior Terrace this summer, focusing on printmaking tecniques.

Stanley Marcus at Lilac Park

The Wit has installed 7 of Stanley Marcus' sculptures in Lilac Park on Main St. in Lenox. The sculptures will be on display through November 1st.

As you enter the park, the grounds become alive with a garden of lyrical and musical figures. They are enchanting and almost absurd the way the sculptures are having fun, Jazz on the Fiddle, Blues on the Violin, The Merry Cello Player, The Electric Conductor to name a few. The installation of the sculptures accompanies the free Wednesday Night concert series that will be taking place at the park July 7 through September 1st. All concerts begin at 7pm. Bring the family and a picnic!

At age 40, Stanley Marcus left the business world to fully pursue his lifelong interest in making art. He has since earned his doctorate at Teachers College, Columbia University. His dissertation on David Smith has been published as "DAVID SMITH, The Sculptor and His Work” by Cornell University and has made Mr. Marcus a recognized authority on Smith. His teaching career included several years as Assistant Professor of Sculpture at N.Y.U. and eighteen years as Chairman of Art at the University of Texas in Odessa where currently he is Professor Emeritus.

Now 83, Mr. Marcus continues to work at sculpture seven days a week.

New to The Wit Gallery this month is the "Humans Being" series work of ceramic sculpture by Barbara Scavotto-Earley. These pieces are colorful, fun, and are lively conversation starters.

According to Barbara, every "body" has a story:

"My sculptural stories are inspired by personal experiences, relationships, everyday observations and psychological issues. They are communicated thematically through the marvelous attitudes, postures and gestures of the body – the dialect of humans being. Throughout my Art career, I have modeled, assembled, painted, carved and welded virtues, intemperance, social concerns, spirituality, humor and other pieces in the epic puzzle of human conduct. A sprinkling of wit is common, even in my most reflective sculptures. I enkindle fellowship and dialogue between human form and spirit and humankind’s most powerful universal language – the voice of the body. You are welcomed into the compositional space and company of the clay performers and props; into a place where collectivity transcends blindness and boundary and invites the arousal of your own humanness."

Barbara's work has been shown throughout the Northeast and will be featured at The Wit Gallery through November 2010.

Lenox Memorial Day Art Walk

Join us on Memorial Day weekend as we participate in the Lenox Art Association's annual Art Walk. Galleries across the village of Lenox. MA, will be participating by providing refreshments and live arts demonstrations. The Wit's own Michael Alfano will be under a tent in front of the gallery demonstrating the process of bronze sculpture making by creating a new sculpture just for the occasion.

Lenox is the home to Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the the Tanglewood music school. Following this theme, Michael will be sculpting a likeness of one of Tanglewood's musical celebrities. See if you can recognize who it is!

The Art Walk is scheduled for Saturday & Sunday May 29th & 30th from 11a.m. - 5 p.m. Guide books and maps will be available at the Town Hall at the new Lenox Visitor's Center, and participating galleries will be marked with red, white and blue balloons. We hope to see you there!

About the artist:

Michael Alfano turned away from the world of finance to the field of sculpture as a catharsis after a personal tragedy. He first studied at the Art Students League in New York with an emphasis on life size sculpture and anatomy. His formal education continued at Boston University and included internships with several prominent sculptors.

Michael Alfano’s smaller pieces are cast in bronze, copper and bonded bronze and explore images of the human figure and torso and many varied themes based on the human face. Michael’s monuments are on permanent display throughout the Northeast.

Among his commissioned work is a Holocaust memorial for the Jericho Jewish Center in New York, “Ethics of Peace” for Georgetown University in Washington DC, a statue of Walt Whitman for a library in New York and a portrait of Anwar Sadat commissioned by the Sadat family.

"My work is a direct reaction to an increasingly socially disconnected world filled with televised images of terror as well as the ongoing decline of cultures, civilizations, and the decay of the landscape itself. Relief comes from introducing hope into each work as an impulsive element that prevents total collapse into darkness.

My images echo my emotions and my awe of wild and primitive nature with its cyclical patterns of birth, life, death, and resurrection. I am deeply moved by this incredible, strong earth, and yet I am terrified by its fragility. The landscape is filled with fear of isolation and devastation, yet interlaced with a continual hope for communion. This landscape, devoid of people, is made up of scrubby wastelands. scorched earth, mysterious forests, wild plant life, and occasionally obscure structures.

My paintings begin loosely and spontaneously with many layers of transparent paint. I let the paint drip, flow, and pool with little interference. That allows the painting to naturally assume a sense of untamed nature as its foundation. The work, subsequently, unfolds as images that reveal themselves in a continuing search for uncontrollable beauty and the divine in nature."

Riitta Klint was born in Helsinki, Finland. She attended the University of Texas at Austin for Fashion Design and Textiles and received a BFA from Florida Atlantic University, Boca Raton, Florida. She currently maintains a studio in Miami, Florida. Her work has appeared in many juried group exhibitions in the Miami area. Her work will be on display at The Wit Gallery through August 2010.

Alan Binstock is an artist, yoga teacher, NASA architectural engineer and cabinet builder. "Mind Wave", made entirely of glass rectangles fused together, is a piece which combines the art and knowledge of architectural engineering and the wisdom gained from the practice of meditation and yoga. The piece is triangular and stands on its own, whichever end you decide is "up". You can gaze within the "wave" and sit in quiet meditation with it for any length of time. Some of the glass pieces are perfectly straight and smooth, others are jagged and purposefully chipped by the artist, mirroring that the self is not a perfect being, but a combination of some perfection and some flaws. Goodbye to Farewell

We are excited to announce that we have new paintings by Richard Salcido here at the Wit. His images are a fresh look at pop-art; they are abstract, yet recognizable. His influences are daydreams, an emotion, or a simple, brief thought.

Paralleling most non-objective abstract painters, he leaves even his distinct images without any existing weight. It is for the viewer alone to have their own personal relationship with each work and to attach meaning to it.

My work is very important: I try to get the best finished product possible for that day. I know the enjoyment I get out of my own work and I want it to be shared with others. This is my artistic goal.

September Fruits

We are very pleased to have paintings by Ramón Gutíerrez here at the gallery. Gutierrez creates mixed media paintings on raw canvas with oil, charcoal and layered fabric pieces. His work is influenced by Picasso, Cezanne and Velazquez as well as the equally unique rhythms of jazz, rock, opera, blues and other musical genres.

Ramon was born in Barcelona, Spain and today lives and works in Sant Feliu de Guixols, Girona (near the famous Costa Brava region of Spain). He was academically trained in Fine Arts at the University of Barcelona and has exhibited throughout Spain, France and now the United States.

To counter-act a dehumanized world, through my paintings I try to capture the importance of human emotion and relationships. My topics are always bound to the current moment I am living: maternity, childhood, expressions, gestures, the elderly and other striking moments of human existence.

Choate Rosemary Hall, an independent secondary School in Wallingford, Connecticut is hosting a retrospective of Wit Gallery artist Stanley Marcus' indoor and outdoor sculpture. The exhibition, named "The Dance of Life" and Other Sculptures opens the 2009-10 gallery season at the Paul Mellon Arts Center and runs through November 4th, 2009. Forty-three of Stanley's aluminum sculptures are located in the PMAC Art Gallery, Theater Gallery and various locations on the campus, which would make for a fun outing with the family, as Mr. Marcus' sculptures are witty, playful and energetic. Bring a lunch, and make a day of it!

Stanley Marcus works in Aluminum and is recognized for his innovations in aluminum forges. He is the Professor Emeritus, The University of Texas of the Permian Basin, Odessa, Texas. He has had numerous public commissions, including the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Sarasota Florida, the Ellen Noel Museum, Odessa, Texas, and the Lubbock International Airport, Lubbock, Texas. He has also published a seminal work, David Smith; The Sculptor and his Work, published by the Cornell University Press.

An opening reception will be held Friday, September 25th at 6:30 pm at the PMAC Gallery.

Babette Bloch and Suzanne Howes-Stevens at "Jump IN!"

"Jump IN!" is a water themed exhibition envisioned and curated by Jenny Hersch of the Housatonic River Museum. Included in this exhibition of over 20 artists are Suzanne Howes-Stevens' Northeastern waterways painted on maps and Babette Bloch's Koi sculptures of laser-cut aluminum.

The exhibition takes place through October 31st at the Lichtenstein Center for the Arts at 28 Renne Ave., Pittsfield, MA. Hours are Wednesday -Saturday from 12 - 5pm. 413-499-9348.

New Artist at the Wit Gallery: Michael Sean McKay

New on the walls of the gallery this month are the mixed media oil paintings of Michael McKay. Music, poetry, nature and nostalgia inform each of these paintings. McKay's combination of textured paint, organic materials such as mushrooms or chestnuts, and inorganic materials like cut up-vinyl records and photographs collide and channel the geometry and pattern found in the garden, the plowed field, the sax solo and the forest.

I'm interested in the collision and combination of organic and geometric forms and the resulting surfaces, textures and patterns. The various objects incorporated in the paintings most often provide the starting point for the work. Although the objects may dictate or suggest the painting’s form, I try to create hybrid constructed paintings wherein the paint and objects meld and emerge codependent; reinforcing the concept of painting as object.

New Artist at the Wit: Deborah Kruger, Textile Artist

The Wit Gallery is pleased to have on display the textile art of Deborah Kruger. Ms. Kruger is a nationally recognized and award-winning fiber artist with over twenty-five years experience as an inspirational public speaker. She has received numerous grants and has worked as a curator and consultant for many arts organizations. Deborah blends fiber and encaustic to create pieces that feel organic in form and spirit. Often described as feather-like, or evoking the art of tribal peoples, Deborah Kruger explains:

"In echoing the ceremonial feather art made by Amazonian tribes, my intention here is to evoke feathers using a complex 9 step process incorporating an array of distinctly unfeathery materials. Once I have created a palette of hundreds of ‘feathers’, I build the pieces in layers, much like the pelt of the raptors that inspire my titles."

Deborah's work will be on display at the gallery for the 2009 season.

The repetition and symmetry of Cheryl Eve's work conveys a feeling of movement and fluidity. The inspiration for this series of jewelry stems from her interest in the study of organic forms of nature: the exoskeleton structures of bones, shells, and plants, their patterns and connections, the contour and negative space. The result is light, sculptural jewelry where the negative space is equally as beautiful as the form of the piece.

Cheryl's work will be shown here at the Wit Gallery throughout the 2009 Summer Season.

KyongHwa Oh, Ceramics Artist

Please join us July 18th from 5pm - 7pm for "Wine Pairing, Cheryl Eve Acosta and KyoungHwa Oh", a reception and wine tasting in collaboration with Brix Bistro of Pittsfield.

KyoungHwa Oh sculpts and hand carves sculptural art vessels out of porcelain. Born in Seoul, South Korea, she developed a natural connection to the traditional ceramics of the region. Her life experiences and cultural background are the inspiration for work that resembles water droplets, flower buds, cabbage and other organic objects. Each vessel is created to be unique to itself; it is first thrown on the potting wheel, and then altered by cutting and carving to create a new form. The artist explains:

"Through the carving process, I strive to depict positive and negative space uniting the ideas of fullness and emptiness. I create ceramic objects that reflect traditional Korean culture and western contemporary style. Eastern and Western cultures are symbolically expressed through this language. Like Yin and Yang, my work encompasses the influence between traditional Asian values and modern Western society."

KyoungHwa's work will be on display at The Wit Gallery throughout the season.
